Polyvagal Theory — explained simply for everyday life

Stephen Porges' theory revolutionized trauma research. Here's what it means for you.

Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory describes how our autonomic nervous system, via the vagus nerve, constantly scans our surroundings for safety or danger — a process Porges calls “neuroception”.

This gives rise to three basic states: safety and connection, mobilisation (fight or flight), and shutdown (freeze). Many people under chronic stress are stuck in the lower states without realising it.

Understanding these states removes self-blame: your reactions aren't a character flaw, they're protective mechanisms — and they can be regulated again with focused work.
